MTA Competition for Thespians

Ella MacGregor, Senior Writer

Our theatre department competed at MTA on January 12th through the 15th. Theatre Production got to compete in the Secondary Festival with their show Babette’s Feast. They won second runner up Best Production, Best Scenic Design, Best Ensemble Acting, and All Star Cast with Makyla Fleming and Kalen Wallace. Pre-Production competed in Theatre for Youth with their show Celeste where they won All Star Cast with Sachi Carroll and Lowe Tran. Celeste was written by TAs Makyla Fleming, Richard Sullivan, Kennedy Carruth (Technical Director), and Madison DeVaul (Stage Manager). Madison DeVaul stated, “Celeste is inspired by the video game Celeste! Mrs. Ray introduced us to the game, and we got permission from the gaming creators to make their video game into a play.” Additionally, all juniors and seniors auditioned for college programs and college scholarships. College representatives that were looking for theatre students to join their program watched the performances of a monologue and a song. The Tom Booth Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship that is awarded to a senior or seniors that auditioned in the college auditions, and Makyla Fleming was the honored recipient of the scholarship. Thespians also competed in Individual Events such as Acting, Acting Duet, Original Scene, Acting Group, Costume Design, and Publicity Design with students placing in first, second, and third. There was also a new section of IEs that students could participate in entitled ODEOs. This stands for open division for evaluation only, and several students were scored well by adjudicators. We are so proud of our theatre students!
